Open Education

A Voice for Every Child

The Movement

Open Education was founded in 2020, inspired by the vision of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar — that education is the most powerful tool for liberation. We started small. We started on the streets. And today, we are present across 21 locations in Mumbai and its surrounding areas.

Our classrooms do not always have walls. Our students do not always have shoes. But they show up — and that, in itself, is extraordinary.

Who We Teach

We work with children who fall completely outside the mainstream education system:

  • Children begging at traffic signals
  • Children selling small goods on streets and local trains
  • Children performing street acrobatics (Dombari)
  • Migrant children living on footpaths and under bridges
  • Children from the city’s most economically vulnerable families

These are not children who don’t want to learn. These are children who were never given the chance.

What We Do

We provide free education, nutritious meals, and educational materials to every child who walks through our doors — or rather, who sits down under our open sky.

We have enrolled 57 students into government Zilla Parishad schools, giving them a formal place in the education system. We distribute food grains, clothes, and toys to families in need. We support pregnant women with hospital assistance. We celebrate festivals, hold drawing competitions, sports events, and cultural programs — because childhood should have joy, not just survival.

Over the past 6 years, more than 400 students have received education through Open Education.

Our Presence

We currently operate across: Panvel, Khandeswar, Khanda Colony, Kalamboli (School Under the Bridge), Mumbra, Sanpada, Belapur, Seawood-Dharave, Chembur, Dadar, Matunga, Bandra, Andheri, Mira Road, Borivali, Virar, and Bhayander.

Our motto says it all: “Wherever there’s a local train, there’s Open Education.”
